13-year-old karting champion meets Team BRIT

A 13-year-old boy from Ipswich who lives with a number of challenging medical conditions has spent time meeting Team BRIT.

Jack Ferguson has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, Asperger's syndrome, arthritis and a leaky heart valve.  When he was a baby his conditions were so severe that his parents had to revive him several times a week, and doctors have advised him not to partake in sports.

Despite this, Jack dreams of becoming a Formula 1 driver and does not allow his medical condition to stop him.  He regularly races go karts and is often the fastest driver on the track, being crowned the 2017 Anglia Indoor Kart Champion. Having heard of his story, Team BRIT founder Dave Player made contact with his family to invite him to meet the team.

Jack and his father Pete, who inspired Jack through his own Formula Ford driving, were invited to meet the team’s drivers and crew at the Birkett 6-hour relay held at Silverstone on Saturday.  Dave Player will also be inviting Jack to take part in a karting event next year with his linked charity ‘KartForce’ which enables injured military veterans to participate in motorsport.

Jack said "It was great to meet so many people who love motor racing, and see disabled drivers proving they are as good as all the other drivers."

Jack’s dad Pete said, “I had a fantastic time. It was great to see Team BRIT prove themselves as a force to be reckoned with.”

For Dave, sharing the ethos and determination of the team with people like Jack is extremely important.  He said, “When we saw Jack’s story, we knew we had to invite him to come and meet the team and see what we’re going to achieve.

“Jack says that when he is driving in a kart, all his medical challenges vanish, and this is what we also hear from our drivers, who live with a number of psychological and physical disabilities.

“Motorsport allows everyone to compete equally, something we have enabled thanks to our technology and I hope Jack has been inspired to follow his dreams by hearing more about our story and our goal of Le Mans.”
