School boy from Hemel Hempstead meets Team BRIT

A seven-year-old boy from Hemel Hempstead who has been diagnosed with a rare bone condition, has spent the day meeting a team of disabled racing drivers.

Evan Woodgate was diagnosed with Perthes disease in October of last year. His parents noticed that he was suffering with pains in his shins after exercise and was starting to walk with a limp.  Perthes disease is a rare childhood condition that affects the hip, temporarily affecting the blood supply to the thighbone. Evan now uses crutches day to day, and a wheelchair for longer days out.

On Sunday 14th April, Evan and his father, Dave, visited Team BRIT at Brands Hatch, where it was competing in the BMW 116 Trophy.  The team’s drivers are all disabled and it is aiming to be the first ever all-disabled team to race in the Le Mans 24 hour.

One of the team’s rookie drivers, 19-year-old Bobby Trundley who lives with autism, competed in his first ever race and won for the team.  Other drivers who use wheelchairs or have limb disabilities have access to the team’s world leading hand control technology.

Evan and Dave spent time in the team’s garage, chatting with drivers and the team’s founder, and learning about the team’s cars and technology.

Evan’s father Dave said, “We are extremely grateful to Team BRIT for spending time with us, the story they tell has really inspired Evan.

“Thankfully, Evan’s condition is temporary so in two to four years he should re-gain full mobility. Seeing the team’s drivers and hearing about their disabilities that will affect them for life was such a powerful message for him. They showed him that being disabled doesn't mean ‘unable’.

“He has taken away the team’s ethos of #BelieveAndAchieve and he has spoken of virtually nothing else since. He has become more enthusiastic and accepting of his situation, thanks to the positive message portrayed by the team. We wish Team BRIT the best of luck in the race season this year.”
