Being a racing driver involves more than learning and honing your skills on track.

Motorsport is expensive, and every driver is required to bring funding to the team to enable them to race. Very few drivers can self-finance, so it takes determination, persistence and skill to create sponsorship pitches to approach businesses and individuals with, and ask for their support.

Being a Team BRIT driver means being supported with training and development opportunities to support this, in the same way that our coaches support our drivers on track.

This week, our drivers were invited to attend bespoke value-based training in London, hosted by training provider ‘The Other Mind’.

Co-founder Paul Bobin has known Team BRIT Principal Mike Scudamore for years and was quick to offer support for the team by lending their skills and expertise.

Training Director at The Other Mind, Jayne Marks explains, “Our passion is to support people to be the best that they can be. We do that through skills training.

“Our trainers all have both a commercial and learning and development background. We help our clients bring true tangible value to their customers through our commercial work. We also support development in leadership and coaching and high performance mindset. All 3 of these areas will be important in the programme for Team BRIT.

“Mike explained that he was keen for drivers to improve their confidence in promoting themselves, so we wanted to help. Many of our courses focus on transforming someone’s confidence or skill levels to make that difference.

“The focus of our Team BRIT day was to bring aspects of this to the drivers. We wanted to help them understand their purpose, passion and value, then enable them to communicate to their future audience – potential sponsors – and tell that story with confidence.

“Our approach is about helping people to really see the skills they need. They see it, then they own it, and we provide the theory and knowledge to put the next steps in place.”

The drive to help

Jayne continues, “If there’s anything we can do to help someone else, that’s where our passion is.

“We’re lucky to work with big, multi-national companies. We’re privileged and excited to give that knowledge back and keen to see how we can have a positive impact with Team BRIT.

“We want to see how we can support this team to go even higher with their performance, because it’s not just about what you do on track. It is also the approach off the track…this team is incredibly inspiring – how we can we help them inspire many others?”

Team Principal Mike Scudamore said: “What a fantastic session we had with The Other Mind team. They put so much effort into creating a session that was bespoke and specifically tailored to the needs of our drivers.

“Seeing them engage with our drivers – some of whom aren’t the most confident at ‘selling’ themselves, was excellent and the whole team took so much from it.

“We’re incredibly grateful for their time and efforts and I look forward to working with the drivers on putting everything they’ve learned into practice.”
